ANZ and ANZ Plus are the same bank — but two different banking platforms. ANZ Plus is ANZ's newer, app-first platform with its own app, its own account range and its own (generally higher) savings rates. Classic ANZ is the traditional bank: the familiar ANZ app, internet banking and the branch network. The confusion is understandable, because you can be an ANZ customer on either platform — or both at once.

What Actually Differs

The app and access

ANZ Plus runs in its own app with its own login — separate from the classic ANZ app. It's built to be self-service: joining, saving goals and support all happen in-app. Classic ANZ keeps the full traditional toolkit, including branch access. You're still dealing with the same bank either way.

The savings products and rates

The platforms don't share products. ANZ Plus offers the Growth Saver — currently ANZ's highest savings rate, with a simple grow-your-balance condition. Classic ANZ offers the Progress Saver (bonus for regular deposits and no withdrawals) and the Online Saver (a low ongoing rate with an intro bonus for new customers). The gap between the platforms' rates is substantial — see the table above.

Conditions

Each account earns its top rate differently: the Growth Saver wants your balance higher at month's end, the Progress Saver wants a deposit and no withdrawals. Miss a condition and you earn the base rate for that month — our bonus conditions explainer covers how these traps work across all banks.

One bank, one deposit guarantee

ANZ Plus is not a separate bank — it operates under ANZ's banking licence. Deposits are protected by the government's Financial Claims Scheme up to $250,000 per person, per licensed bank — and because both platforms are the same licensed bank, that cap applies to your combined ANZ and ANZ Plus balances, not to each separately.

Which Should You Choose?

For savers, the current answer is usually ANZ Plus: the Growth Saver's rate is well ahead of anything on the classic platform, and its condition is simpler than the Progress Saver's. Stay on classic ANZ if you rely on branch service or products ANZ Plus doesn't offer yet. And if neither rate leads the market — check how both stack up against the best savings accounts we track, because the top non-ANZ rates are meaningfully higher again.

FAQs

What is the difference between ANZ and ANZ Plus?

ANZ Plus is ANZ's newer, app-based banking platform — same bank, separate app and separate product range. Classic ANZ accounts (like the Online Saver and Progress Saver) are managed through the traditional ANZ app and internet banking with full branch support, while ANZ Plus accounts (like the Save account and Growth Saver) live in the ANZ Plus app, which is designed to be self-service first. The two platforms have different savings rates and different bonus conditions.

Is ANZ Plus safe?

Yes. ANZ Plus is not a separate bank — it operates under ANZ's Australian banking licence, so deposits are covered by the Australian Government's Financial Claims Scheme up to $250,000 per person. One nuance: because classic ANZ and ANZ Plus are the same licensed bank, the $250,000 guarantee cap applies to your combined balances across both, not $250,000 in each.

What interest rate does ANZ Plus pay?

The ANZ Plus Growth Saver pays up to 5.10% p.a. when you grow your balance each month — currently ANZ's highest savings rate, ahead of the classic Progress Saver (3.74% p.a. with conditions) and Online Saver (1.35% p.a. ongoing). Rates change — check the current figures in our reviews.

Does ANZ Plus have fees?

ANZ Plus has no monthly account-keeping fees on its everyday and savings accounts. Classic ANZ savings accounts (Online Saver, Progress Saver) also carry no monthly fee. As always, fees can apply to specific services — international transactions, for example — so check the product's fee schedule for anything unusual you plan to do.

Can I have both ANZ and ANZ Plus accounts?

Yes — plenty of customers hold classic ANZ accounts and ANZ Plus accounts at the same time (they use separate apps and logins). There's no automatic migration of classic accounts into ANZ Plus; moving is opt-in. If you're chasing the best savings rate, compare the current rates on both platforms before deciding where your savings should sit.
